Association for Latvian Children with Physical Disabilities signed the contract No. 2013.EEZ/PP/1/MEC/076/044 on 15th August 2014 with the Society Integration Foundation about the Project “We can, if we want!!”,  id. No. 2013.EEZ/PP/1/MEC/076, that will be part of EEA Grants 2009-2014 program „NGO fund". The Project implementation period will be from 01.09.2014. till 31.08.2015.

A social rehabilitation program has been designed for young people.

In September 2015, a social rehabilitation program for young people was established in a collaboration with knowledgeable union specialists and representatives of Welfare Department of Riga City Council.  Liga Barone, Mg.Sc.Sal., listened to the viewpoints of specialists and summarized her innovative ideas of youth rehabilitation. She has been working in the union with children and young people for many years. The aim of the established program is to improve young people’s with special needs living situation, thus they could have wholesome social and economically active life, by successfully integrating into society.

A new program launch has been started.

A potentional program participant selection was organized at the same time with the development of program. 30 young people with special needs started the membership in the program on October 2015. Each program participant has attended a rehabilitation doctor’s consultation, who has worked in a team with physiotherapists and has evaluated the skills of young people.Specialists have prepared recommendations and therapy plans for young people’s future work. Young poeple are going to take part in combined  lap physiotherapy sessions that will include three young people in every session in a duration of nine months.  Hydrotherapy lessons in pool, individual and group psychologist lessons, creative lessons are also intended to take place. The parents of young people who are involved in the program will also participate in psychologist’s group lessons in order to improve their knowledge about adolescents, to increase self-esteem and to strengthen the sense of competence.

Innovative methods in young people’s rehabilitation.

Pedometry is as an innovative and integrative measure in a rehabilitation process on a daily basis. Each program participant received a pedometer that counts everyday walked steps. The aim of this process is to ensure participants’ physical activities and to evaluate the progress growth. Another innovation is an introduction of diary therapy which will help young people to realize their opportunities, the current situation and resources of overcoming difficulties. Program participants will write down their emotional status, assessment of activities, home works, as well as the amount of walked steps in their diaries. In order to provide the implementation of innovative methods, digital pedometers and USB memory cards (digital diaries) have been given to the program participants. Each participant received a notepad where to write down homework and also young people’s social rehabilitation program copy.

Purchased rehabilitation equipment.

Thanks to the co-financing of our collaboration partner Welfare Department of Riga City Council, a veloergometer „ BIKE REHA” has been purchased in order to provide a successful young people’s rehabilitation program. The promoter of the project already has different types of rehabilitation equipment, which is used by specialists, but thanks to the veloergometer it will be possible to develop young people’s respiratory system, to strengthen the cardiovascular system, to reduce the metabolic rate, to prevent the accumulation of fat, as well as provide physical endurance development for program participants.

The total costs of the Project are 55’552,00 EUR. The maximum co-financing programs of the total eligible costs is 90% or 49996,80 EUR (where 95% of the program's financing is provided from the European Economic Area Financial Mechanism and 5% of Latvian national budget). 10% being co-financed by the “Association for Latvian Children with Physical Disabilities” and The Welfare Department of the Riga City Council.
