Youth social rehabilitation program is coming to a finish!

Association for Latvian Children with Physical Disabilities signed the contract No. 2013.EEZ/PP/1/MEC/076/044 on 15th August 2014 with the Society Integration Foundation about the Project “We can, if we want!!”,  id. No. 2013.EEZ/PP/1/MEC/076, that will be part of EEA Grants 2009-2014 program „NGO fund". The Project implementation period will be from 01.09.2014. till 31.08.2015.

The rehabilitation program. Since, October 2014, 30 young people from the region of Riga, aged between 12-25 years and 30 of their parents / family members are engaged in a social rehabilitation program. Every young person involved in the project is ensured 1 rehab doctor consultation, to ensure that the participant's overall health and the ability to participate in the program. After the closure of a program, young people will be provided with another rehab doctor consultation, during which, the achievements of young people will be appreciated and future rehabilitation recommendations will be prepared.

Young people involved in 68 of the combined circle physiotherapy sessions. The combined circle physiotherapy sessions is seen as an innovative rehabilitation method, because it combines physiotherapy and socialization activities. Experience shows that, if 3 young people work at the same time, then teamwork and mutual support forms during work, competitive spirit in an effort to achieve better results. Physiotherapists acknowledge when young people want to show others, how well you can do a physiotherapists assigned tasks, thereby seeking more than working alone with a specialist. Also, specialists say that this lesson organization is a challenge even for professionals, because they need to learn to divide attention between several young people, to adapt to the needs and abilities of each person.

Thanks to the funding, the young people that are involved in the Project until the end of May visited the Olympic Sports Centre swimming pool twice a month. During hydrotherapy sessions, young people got to understand more about their movements and muscle core principles in water, which is very different from the usual physiotherapy exercises nowadays.

Likewise, every young person was ensured with 10 individual and 10 group psychologist consultations. Project psychologist Liga Roke- Reimate admits, that during the Project, the reached psychological help for the youth with movement interferences contributed to communication skills. Young people are able to understand and express their feelings and emotions, as well as, they have learned to manage them and express them in a constructive way. During psychologist classes, the ability of empathy fostered development – ability to understand the other persons emotional state and actions. Likewise, improve young people’s individuality and their positive awareness resources.

A relaxed atmosphere to improve young people's social skills and train the small motility skills, as well as, to help have fun after the tiring physical rehabilitation activities, 10 creative activities were prepared for the youth. In creative activities they obtained, made jewelery, worked with decoupage machinery, prepared surprises for loved ones on Saint Valentine's and Mother's Day, did crochet etc..

Summer Seminar. From July 30th to August 8th in Vaivari, Jurmala city one of the last activities of the Project will take place - intensive rehabilitation summer seminar, which is the last component of the rehabilitation program. During the seminar, regular rehabilitation and other classes are ensured as a follow-up, which will contribute to their successful social integration and will improve young people overall health. All seminar days various types of qualified personnel and volunteers  will work with the 30 young people from Riga region and the 4 young people from the association “We, for our children” from Madona region. During the seminar, young people are ensured with 7 combined lap physiotherapy sessions, 2 style consultants and 2 behavior and communication consultant lectures, 4 creative classes, 4 improvisation theater classes, as well as 8 hydrotherapy classes in the National Rehabilitation Center “Vaivari” swimming pool. Likewise, young people will have the tracking lessons by the Baltic Sea and dunes. Well-known cultural figures and people with a disability will be invited, who are going to talk about how they once themselves had to start their career with the same starting point as the people in the seminar.

The total costs of the Project are 55’552,00 EUR. The maximum co-financing programs of the total eligible costs is 90% or 49996,80 EUR (where 95% of the program's financing is provided from the European Economic Area Financial Mechanism and 5% of Latvian national budget). 10% being co-financed by the “Association for Latvian Children with Physical Disabilities” and The Welfare Department of the Riga City Council.
