Project is over!

The implementation of project „We can if we want!” ID No. 2013.EEZ/PP/1/MEC/076 was completed on August 29 with a final seminar. The project was started on September 1, 2014 and was implemented during 12 months.

Project participants. Project’s direct target group was 30 young people with disabilities from Riga region and 30 of their family members, as well as 4 young people with disabilities from Vidzeme region. The age of youth involved- 12-25 years. 59% of involved young people were women but 41%- men. 30 young people from Riga region were chosen in collaboration with Riga Welfare Department but 4 young people from Vidzeme region were found thanks to the project collaboration partner- union „We for our children”. The total number of the involved people in project’s  direct target group - 64 people.

Rehabilitation program for young people.  Social rehabilitation program was developed and set up during the project. 30 families from Riga took part in the approbation of the program.

Young people were given 60 individual rehabilitation doctor consultations, 680 combined circle lessons in groups, 28 hydrotherapy lessons in the swimming pool of  Olympic Sports Center, 300 individual and 30 group counseling and 30 creative lessons.  Parents of young people were provided with 21 group lessons where their stress was reduced,  parental competence was raised and learned necessary knowledge about teenage parenting.

Summer seminar. From July 30 to August 8, 4 young people from Vidzeme region joined young people from Riga region, in order to improve their physical and social skills during the intenstive summer rehabilitation seminar. Young people attended hydrotherapy lessons every day  in the swimming pool of  National rehabilitation center „Vaivari” ,  they took classes in creative lessons and improvization  theatre, took part in combined circle physiotherapy sessions.  Style and communication culture specialist also met with young people. Every evening some known person was invited to meet these young people.

Final seminar. On August 29, NGO building in Riga, 42 Laimdotas street gathered project participants, employees, representatives of collaboration partners, invited guests and other interested parties.  Project assistant  presented achieved results, a specialist of  the collaboration partner Riga City Council Welfare Department talked about social support opportunities in Riga.

Representative of  union „We for our children” introduced  union’s history and shared knowledge about organizing different cultural events. Invited guests from Latvian Paraolympic committee  urged young people to continue working with themselves, not to be afraid of taking challenges and building their own future. During the coffee break, participants joined in conversations with new friends and guests, shared impressions that were gained during the project. Young people admitted that project has let them become physically more independent and feel more free in the society.

The total costs of the Project are 55’552,00 EUR. The maximum co-financing programs of the total eligible costs is 90% or 49996,80 EUR (where 95% of the program's financing is provided from the European Economic Area Financial Mechanism and 5% of Latvian national budget). 10% being co-financed by the “Association for Latvian Children with Physical Disabilities” and The Welfare Department of the Riga City Council.
